神のみ心を見分け、信仰によって従う

聖書箇所：使徒16章9、10節
9 ある夜、パウロは幻を見た。ひとりのマケドニヤ人が彼の前に立って、「マケドニヤに渡って来て、私たちを助けてください」と懇願するのであった。
10 パウロがこの幻を見たとき、私たちはただちにマケドニヤへ出かけることにした。神が私たちを招いて、彼らに福音を宣べさせるのだ、と確信したからである。
イントロ
今年のテーマは聖霊です。私たちの日常生活において、聖霊の声を聞き、聖霊の導きに従うことはとても大切です。聖霊は意志を持ち、また計画を持っておられます。ですから、信仰生活とは、聖霊の声をしっかりと聞き、その導きに従うことなのです。
しかし、日常生活において、私たちは神様が見えるわけでもなく、神様と話すことができるわけでもありませんので、神様の御心を知ることは簡単ではありません。
クリスチャン用語で「御心とお心」という言い方があります。なかなか面白い考え方だと思います。御心とは神様の願い、お心とは自分の願いです。では、どのようにして御心とお心とを区別するのでしょうか。
結論からお話しすると、神様の御心を100％正確に理解することはできないということです。しかし、御心だと確信したら、信仰を持って従うのです。
今日の聖書箇所で、パウロたちは神のみ心だと確信したと書かれています。確信とは、100％理解したということではないはずです。パウロでさえも、完全に分かったわけではないのです。しかし、彼はそれが神様のみ心だと確信したのです。
今日はパウロの人生から、彼がどのように御心を知り、それに従っていったかということを共に見ていきたいと思います。それは、私たちが神様の御心を求める上で大きな助けになると思います。
背景と導き
まず、背景からお話しします。これはパウロの第二次宣教旅行での出来事です。第二次宣教旅行は紀元49年から52年ごろと言われています。この直前に起こった大事な出来事は、使徒15章に書かれているエルサレム会議と呼ばれているものです。この会議において初代教会は、異邦人宣教を正式に認めました。
さて、パウロ一行は最初、ガラテヤ地方からアジア地方、つまりエペソに行こうとしましたが、聖霊がそれを止めたと書かれています。また、ガラテヤの北方のビテニア地方に行こうとしましたが、それも止められました。
使徒の働き16:6-8
6 それから彼らは、アジヤでみことばを語ることを聖霊によって禁じられたので、フルギヤ・ガラテヤの地方を通った。
7 こうしてムシヤに面した所に来たとき、ビテニヤのほうに行こうとしたが、イエスの御霊がそれをお許しにならなかった。
8 それでムシヤを通って、トロアスに下った。
地図で確認しましょう。
聖霊は彼らに、西でもなく、北でもなく、北西に向かって進むようにされたのです。そしてトロアスという港に導かれたのです。
そして、今日の箇所の出来事が起こりました。ですから、彼らはいつも聖霊の導きのとおりに進んでいたことが分かります。では、彼らはどうやって神のみ心を判別したのでしょうか。これが今日のテーマです。そして、ここから分かることは、聖霊は私たちの人生の方向も導いておられるということです。
I. 神様が計画を変更された
パウロたちは、エペソに行きたかったと思いますが、神様はパウロをマケドニアに行かせたかったのです。ここに、神様が私たちの人生における「お心と御心の違い」が現れています。クリスチャンは、自分の好きなように生きるのではなく、神様の御心に従って生きる者なのです。日常の小さな決断で、いちいち神様の御心を求める必要はないと思いますが、人生の大きな決断においては、神様の御心を求め、それに従うことが大事です。
たとえば、仕事を選ぶとか、誰と結婚するとか、またどの教会に所属するかなどは、神様の御心を求めることが大切です。
神様が祈りに応えてくださらなかったり、自分の願うことがかなえられなかったりしても、驚くべきことではありません。それは、神様の御心と計画が私たちの願いとは違っているということなのです。
パウロをマケドニアに導いた神様の宣教計画は、まずマケドニア、そしてコリント、次にエペソの順番だったのです。人生における方向転換を余儀なくされたとしても、それが神の計画であれば、従えばよいのです。従っているうちに、神様の計画が素晴らしいことが分かってきます。
II. み心を確信するプロセス
次に、今日のテーマである御心を確信するための方法について考えてみます。今日の聖書箇所から、パウロが使っていた御心を知るための方法を含めて、六つのフィルターをお話しします。
使徒16:9-10

1. 聖書のチェック
まず、聖書チェックとは、それが罪ではないかということ、また、罪ではなくても神様が望んでいないことではないかを確かめることです。そのためには、聖書をよく読み、神様のことを知ることが必要です。また、五番目の助言とも関わりますが、聖書をよく知っている人に早く相談することも大切です。
アブラハムとロトの決断を考えてみてください。ロトは繁栄しているソドムに住むことを決めました。ソドムを選ぶこと自体は罪ではありません。しかし、そこには神様を知らない多くの罪深い人たちが、堕落した文化の中に住んでいたのです。そこで生まれたのならともかく、わざわざ罪深い町を選ぶ必要はありません。私たちは影響を受ける弱さがありますから、霊的に良い環境に自分を積極的に置くことが大切なのです。
2. 祈る
次に祈ることです。祈りながら神様の御心を求めることです。パウロたちはこのために、いつも祈っていたはずです。祈りの中で神様に教えられたり、示されたりすることがあるはずです。また、祈りは知恵を与え、正しく考えることができるようにしてくれます。祈りによって、聖書的に間違っていることに対して教えられたりもします。ですから、何をするにしても、いつも祈っていることはとても大事です。
ここで、パウロたちは幻を見てすぐに決めたとありますが、それ以前に、なぜエペソに行くことがみ心ではないのかを祈り求めていたはずです。ですから、幻を見た時に、彼らは「そうか。主はこのように導いておられたのだ」と分かったのです。
3. 動機確認
次に大切なのは、動機を確かめることです。これは、「神様のみ心なのか、それとも自分の願いなのか」を見分けるために必要です。つまり、それは自分のためなのか、神様のためなのかを考えることです。
私たちは知らないうちに、自分の願いを「これは神様のみ心だ」と思い込んでしまうことがあります。また、自分でも気づいていない欲や自己中心な思いが、心の奥に隠れていることもあります。
そこで、パウロたちが使った判断の基準が役に立ちます。彼らは、「それが福音宣教のために役立つかどうか」を考えました。
おそらく彼らは、最初から海を渡ってヨーロッパへ行こうとは考えていなかったでしょう。しかし、福音がまだ伝わっていない場所に行くという意味では、ヨーロッパも同じだったのです。
私たちにも、人生を判断する良い基準があります。
- 福音のためになるか
- 神様の栄光につながるか
- 神の国の広がりに役立つか
という視点で考えることです。
そのように見るなら、自分の思いに振り回されず、神様のみ心をより純粋に知ることができるでしょう。
4. 環境
四番目は、環境を見ることです。
これは、神様のみ心であるなら、神様が私たちの置かれている環境にも働いてくださる、ということです。
パウロは、エペソ地方にも、ビテニア地方にも行こうとしましたが、行くことができませんでした。聖書は、それを聖霊が止められたと語っています。
つまり神様は、環境を通して進む道を示されることがあるのです。
私たちの人生でも同じです。進もうとしている道の扉が何度も閉ざされるなら、神様が「今はそこではない」と教えておられる場合があります。
反対に、道が自然に開かれていくこともあります。たとえば結婚なら、互いに同じ心が与えられ、関係が平安のうちに進んでいく。仕事なら、よい就職先が見つかり、必要な条件も整っていく。そういう時には、神様が道を開いておられると考えることができます。
逆に、自分では強く願っていても、何度も壁にぶつかり、どうしても進まないことがあります。その時は、神様が道を閉じておられる可能性があります。
たとえば、カナダに移住しようとして、無事に渡航でき、永住権も順調に進み、仕事も与えられるなら、それは神様の導きと見ることができます。反対に、何度も扉が閉じるなら、別の道を示しておられるのかもしれません。
私は個人的には、この環境を見る方法はとても分かりやすいと思っています。
神様のみ心なら、道が開かれていく。
み心でなければ、道が閉ざされる。
そして、これは時間がたつほどはっきりしてきます。ですから、すぐに決めなくてもよいのです。半年、あるいは一年ほど祈りながら様子を見ることも大切です。
時間の中で、神様は道を明らかにしてくださいます。
5. 助言、そして一致
五番目は、助言、そして一致を見ることです。
これは、信頼できるクリスチャンたちと共に祈り、相談する中で、神様のみ心が見えてくるということです。
パウロは一人で勝手に行動したのではありません。彼には宣教チームがあり、仲間たちと共に歩んでいました。ですから、マケドニアに行く決断についても、仲間たちと話し合い、共に祈り、「これは神様からの導きだ」と確認したはずです。
神様は、人の心にも働かれるお方です。ですから、自分一人の考えだけで決めるのではなく、他の人の意見に耳を傾けることはとても大切です。
もし、多くの成熟したクリスチャンたちが同じように賛成し、平安を持って応援してくれるなら、それは神様の導きである可能性があります。
反対に、信仰深い人たちが皆そろって心配し、止めるなら、少し立ち止まって考える必要があります。神様は、周りの人を通して語られることがあるからです。
たとえば献身して牧師や宣教師になる場合でも、突然本人だけが思いつくのではなく、周囲の人たちが先にその人の賜物や召しを感じていることがあります。
「あの人には教える賜物がある」
「人を励ます力がある」
「主に用いられている」
そのように、周りの人がすでに見ていることがあります。ですから、大切な決断ほど、一人で決めないことです。
祈り合える兄弟姉妹、牧師、信頼できる信徒たちに相談し、その中で神様のみ心を求めていくことが大切です。
6. 平安
六番目は、平安です。
この平安は、ただの感情とは違います。
感情は、その日によって変わります。うれしい日もあれば、不安な日もあります。元気な日もあれば、落ち込む日もあります。
しかし、ここで言う平安とは、心の奥深いところに与えられる静かな安心です。それは、聖霊が私たちの心に働いてくださることで与えられるものです。
ただし、ここで注意しなければならないのは、神様から来る平安と、人間的な安心感は違うということです。
人は、楽な道、安全な道、慣れた道を選ぶと安心します。しかし、それが必ずしも神様のみ心とは限りません。
たとえばパウロにとって、マケドニアに行くことは簡単なことではなかったでしょう。知らない土地ですし、先に何があるかも分かりません。パウロは心配することも多い人でした。
それでも、祈りの中で「ここに進むべきだ」という平安が与えられたのです。
この平安は、外側の状況が全部整ったから生まれる安心ではありません。神様にゆだねた時に、内側に与えられる平安です。
ある人は、「平安があるかどうか」だけで神様のみ心を判断します。しかし私は、平安は最後の確認だと思っています。
神様は時に幻や特別な示しによって導かれます。しかし、毎回そうではありません。多くの場合、神様は御言葉と聖霊、そして与えられた知恵を通して私たちを導かれます。
パウロの人生にも特別な導きがあった時がありましたが、すべての決断が幻によったわけではありません。神様は知恵と判断力を用いて導かれることも多いのです。
ですから、特別な体験だけを待つのではなく、神様から与えられた知恵を用いて、祈りつつ判断してよいのです。
III. 信仰による従順
ここまでお話ししたフィルターを通して、これは神様のみ心だと確信できたなら、次は進むのです。
たとえば、
- 聖書に反していない
- 祈りの中で導きを感じている
- 自分勝手な願いではない
- 環境の面でも道が開かれている
- 信頼できるクリスチャンたちも賛成している
- 心の深いところに平安がある
そのように確認できたなら、それは神様のみ心である可能性が高いのです。
もちろん、最初に申し上げたように、私たちは神様のみ心を100％完全に知ることはできません。しかし、祈りながら十分に吟味し、確信が与えられたなら、次に必要なのは信仰によって一歩を踏み出すことです。
ここが実は一番難しいところです。
なぜなら、人は「これが神様のみ心だ」と分かっても、従わないことができるからです。
不安がある。
失うものがある。
今のままの方が楽。
変化したくない。
そういう思いが出てくるからです。
ですから、み心を求めることは大切ですが、み心に従うことは、それ以上に大切なのです。神様は時に、私たちが信仰によって歩み出すまで、状況を変えられないことがあります。扉の前に立っていても、信仰をもってノックするまで開かれないことがあります。
一歩踏み出して初めて、神様の御業が見えてくることがあるのです。
ヨシュア記3章13〜16節を読むと、ヨシュアとイスラエルがヨルダン川を渡る時、川はまだ勢いよく流れていました。けれども、祭司たちが神の言葉に従って足を踏み入れた時、水は止まりました。神は、信仰の一歩に応えて御業を現されたのです。
考えてみてください。私たちと神様との関係には、いつも同じ流れがあります。
まず神様が語られ、私たちはそれに信仰をもって応答する。これが信仰生活の基本です。
救いもそうです。神様が福音を示してくださり、私たちは信じて応答します。
聖化もそうです。神様が「この道を歩みなさい」と導かれ、私たちは従っていきます。
つまり、信仰生活とは、神様に信頼して一歩ずつ進む歩みなのです。
皆さんも経験があるのではないでしょうか。
洗礼を受ける時、「本当にこの決断でよいのだろうか」と不安になりませんでしたか。
教会を決める時、「他にもっとよい教会があるのではないか」と迷いませんでしたか。
結婚する時、「本当にこの人が神様のみ心なのだろうか」と考えませんでしたか。
引っ越しや転職、移住を考える時にも、「これは神様の計画なのだろうか」と悩むことがあります。
私たちは、先が全部見えてから進むのではありません。神様を信頼しながら、一歩ずつ進むのです。そして、その歩みの中で、神様は導きをはっきりと見せてくださるのです。
私たちは、イエス様と直接電話をしたり、メッセージのやり取りをしたりすることはできません。しかし、神様は私たちを放っておられるのではありません。必要なものを、すでに与えてくださっています。
私たちには聖書があります。聖書を通して、神様がどのようなお方か、何を喜ばれ、何を願っておられるかを知ることができます。
私たちには教会があります。一人で悩むのではなく、共に祈り、支え合い、励まし合う場所です。
私たちには兄弟姉妹の証しがあります。神様が他の人の人生にどのように働かれたかを聞く時、私たちも励まされます。
また、神様は礼拝のメッセージを通して、心に確信を与えてくださることもあります。そして、聖霊は祈りの中で私たちを導いてくださいます。
この地上での信仰生活とは、神様を信頼し、与えられた導きに応答しながら歩むことなのです。
そして感謝なことに、神様は私たちが完全であることを求めておられるのではありません。もし私たちが弱さの中で迷ったり、間違えたりしても、それで終わりにされるお方ではありません。神様は私たちの父です。イエス様は、私たちを愛するゆえに命を捨ててくださったお方です。そのようなお方が、私たちの失敗で私たちを見捨てるでしょうか。決してそうではありません。
むしろ神様は、すべてのことを用いて、私たちの益としてくださるお方です。
ですから、大切なことは、神様のみ心を求めること。そして、み心だと確信するなら、信仰をもって進むことです。
Discerning God's Will and Obeying by Faith
Sunday Worship Service, April 12, 2026
Scripture: Acts 16:9–10 (ESV)
And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”
And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
Introduction
This year’s theme is the Holy Spirit, and it is very important for us in our daily lives to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit and to follow His leading. The Holy Spirit has a will, and He also has a plan. Therefore, the life of faith means listening carefully to the voice of the Holy Spirit and following His guidance.
However, in daily life, we cannot see God, nor can we speak with Him face to face, so it is not easy to know God’s will.
Among Christians, there is sometimes a distinction made between “God’s will” and “our own desires.” It is an interesting way of putting it. God’s will is what God desires; our own desire is what we want. Then how do we distinguish between the two?
Let me begin with the conclusion: we cannot understand God’s will with 100 percent accuracy. But when we become convinced that something is His will, we are to obey it by faith.
In today’s passage, it says that Paul and his companions became convinced that this was God’s will. “Concluding” does not mean they understood everything perfectly. Even Paul did not understand everything completely. But he did become convinced that this was God’s will.
Today, I would like us to look together at Paul’s life and see how he came to know God’s will and how he obeyed it. I believe this will be a great help to us as we seek God’s will in our own lives.
Background and Guidance
First, let me explain the background. This event took place during Paul’s second missionary journey. The second missionary journey is generally dated around AD 49 to 52. The important event that took place just before this was what we call the Jerusalem Council, recorded in Acts 15. At that council, the early church officially recognized the mission to the Gentiles.
Now, Paul and his companions first tried to go from the Galatian region into Asia, that is, toward Ephesus, but the Holy Spirit stopped them. Then they tried to go north toward Bithynia, but they were stopped again.
Acts 16:6–8 (ESV)
And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.
And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.
So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas.
Let us picture this on a map.
The Holy Spirit led them not to the west, not to the north, but toward the northwest. And He led them to the port city of Troas.
Then the event in today’s passage took place. So we can see that they were always moving in step with the leading of the Holy Spirit. But how did they discern God’s will? That is our theme today. And from this we also learn that the Holy Spirit directs the course of our lives as well.
I. God Changed the Plan
Paul and his companions probably wanted to go to Ephesus. But God wanted Paul to go to Macedonia. Here we see the difference between our own desire and God’s will in our lives.
Christians are not called to live however they please, but to live according to God’s will. I do not think we need to ask for God’s will in every small daily decision, but when it comes to major life decisions, it is important to seek God’s will and obey it.
For example, it is important to seek God’s will when choosing a job, deciding whom to marry, or determining which church to belong to.
So we should not be surprised when God does not answer our prayers the way we expect, or when what we desire does not come to pass. It simply means that God’s will and plan are different from our own desires.
God’s missionary plan for Paul was Macedonia first, then Corinth, and then Ephesus. Even if we are forced to change direction in life, if it is God’s plan, then we should follow it. And as we obey, we begin to see how wonderful God’s plan really is.
II. The Process of Becoming Convinced of God’s Will
Next, let us think about how we become convinced of God’s will. From today’s passage, and from Paul’s example, I would like to speak about six filters for discerning God’s will.

And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
The six filters:
1. The test of Scripture
2. Prayer
3. Examining our motives
4. Circumstances
5. Counsel and agreement
6. Peace
- The Test of Scripture
First, the test of Scripture means asking whether something is sin, or even if it is not sin, whether it is something God does not desire. To do this, we need to know God through reading Scripture carefully. It is also important to consult early with someone who knows Scripture well.
Think about the decisions of Abraham and Lot. Lot chose to live in prosperous Sodom. Choosing Sodom was not, in itself, a direct sin. But it was a place full of people who did not know God and who lived in a deeply corrupt culture. If he had been born there, that would be one thing. But there was no need for him to choose such a sinful city. We are weak and easily influenced, so it is important for us to place ourselves intentionally in a spiritually healthy environment.
- Prayer
Next is prayer. We seek God’s will through prayer. Surely Paul and his companions had been praying continually about this. In prayer, God teaches us and shows us things. Prayer also gives wisdom and helps us think rightly. Through prayer, we may also be corrected when something is biblically wrong. Therefore, it is very important that whatever we do, we do it prayerfully.
Here, Paul and his companions seem to make a quick decision after the vision. But before that, they must already have been praying about why going to Ephesus was not God’s will. So when the vision came, they were able to say, “I see. This is how the Lord has been leading us.”
- Examining Our Motives
The next important thing is to examine our motives.
This is necessary in order to discern whether something is truly God’s will or simply our own desire. In other words, we ask: is this for myself, or is it for God?
Without realizing it, we may convince ourselves that our own wishes are God’s will. There can also be hidden desires or self-centered motives deep in our hearts that even we do not recognize.
This is where Paul’s filter helps us. They considered whether this would serve the advance of the gospel.
Most likely, they had not originally intended to cross the sea into Europe. But if the point was to go where the gospel had not yet been preached, then Europe also fit that purpose.
We too have a good filter for life:
• Does this serve the gospel?
• Does this lead to God’s glory?
• Does this contribute to the expansion of God’s kingdom?
If we look at our decisions in this way, we will not be so easily misled by our own desires, and we will be able to know God’s will more purely.
- Circumstances
The fourth filter is to look at our circumstances.
If something is God’s will, then God also works in our circumstances. Paul tried to go to Ephesus and to Bithynia, but he could not. Scripture says that the Holy Spirit prevented him.
In other words, God sometimes shows us the way through circumstances.
The same is true in our lives. If the door to the path we are trying to take keeps closing, it may be that God is saying, “Not this way, not now.”
On the other hand, sometimes a way opens naturally. In marriage, for example, the two people may be given the same heart, and the relationship may move forward in peace. In work, a good position may become available, and the necessary conditions may come together. In such cases, we may say that God is opening the way.
By contrast, even if we strongly desire something, we may keep running into obstacles and be unable to move forward. At such times, God may be closing that door.
For example, if someone is trying to immigrate to Canada and is able to come safely, receives permanent residency smoothly, and finds work, that may be seen as God’s leading. If, on the other hand, the doors keep closing again and again, then perhaps God is showing a different path.
Personally, I find this filter of circumstances very understandable.
If it is God’s will, the way opens. If it is not, the way closes.
And this often becomes clearer over time. So there is no need to rush. Sometimes it is important to wait six months or even a year, praying and watching. Over time, God makes the way clear.
- Counsel and Agreement
The fifth filter is counsel and agreement.
This means that as we pray and consult with trustworthy Christians, God’s will becomes clearer.
Paul did not act independently. He had a missionary team and walked together with others. So when it came to the decision to go to Macedonia, they must have discussed it together, prayed together, and confirmed together, “This is God’s leading.”
God works in people’s hearts. Therefore, it is very important not to make decisions based only on our own thinking, but to listen to the opinions of others.
If many mature Christians agree and support a decision with peace, it may well be God’s leading.
On the other hand, if spiritually mature people are all concerned and urge caution, then we should stop and think. God sometimes speaks through those around us.
For example, when someone is called to become a pastor or missionary, it is often not the case that only the person suddenly thinks of it. Rather, those around them have already recognized that person’s gifts and calling.
People may say:
• “That person has a gift for teaching.”
• “That person has a gift of encouragement.”
• “The Lord is clearly using that person.”
So important decisions should not be made alone.
We should consult brothers and sisters who pray with us, pastors, and trustworthy believers, and seek God’s will together.
- Peace
The sixth filter is peace.
This peace is not the same as emotion.
Our emotions change from day to day. There are happy days and anxious days, energetic days and discouraging days.
But the peace spoken of here is a quiet assurance given deep in the heart. It is something the Holy Spirit gives as He works within us.
However, we must be careful here: peace from God is not the same as natural human comfort.
People feel secure when they choose the easy road, the safe road, the familiar road. But that does not necessarily mean it is God’s will.
For Paul, going to Macedonia could not have been easy. It was an unfamiliar land, and he did not know what lay ahead. Paul was also the kind of person who worried. And yet, in prayer, he was given the peace that said, “This is the way you should go.”
This peace is not something that comes because everything outwardly has already fallen into place. It is the peace God gives inwardly when we entrust ourselves to Him.
Some people judge God’s will only by whether they feel peace. But I believe peace is the final confirmation.
God sometimes leads by visions or special revelations. But not every time. In many cases, God leads us through His Word, His Spirit, and the wisdom He has given us.
There were times in Paul’s life when special guidance was given, but not every decision came through a vision. God often leads through wisdom and sound judgment.
So we do not need to wait only for special experiences. We may use the wisdom God has given us and make decisions prayerfully.
III. Obedience by Faith
If, through these filters, you become convinced that something is God’s will, then the next step is to move forward.
For example:
• It is not contrary to Scripture
• You sense God’s leading in prayer
• It is not a selfish desire
• The way is opening in your circumstances
• Trustworthy Christians agree
• There is deep peace in your heart
If these things are in place, then it is highly likely that this is God’s will.
Of course, as I said earlier, we cannot know God’s will with absolute perfection. But if, after prayerful and careful discernment, conviction is given, then the next thing needed is to take a step by faith.
This is actually the hardest part.
Why? Because even when people know, “This is God’s will,” they can still choose not to obey.
There is fear.
There is something to lose.
The present situation feels easier.
We do not want change.
That is why seeking God’s will is important, but obeying God’s will is even more important.
Sometimes God does not change the situation until we step forward in faith. We may stand before a door, but it will not open until we knock by faith.
Sometimes we only see God’s work after we take the first step.
When we read Joshua 3:13–16, we see that when Joshua and Israel crossed the Jordan, the river was still flowing strongly. But when the priests stepped into the water in obedience to God’s word, the water stopped. God revealed His power in response to a step of faith.
Think about it. There is always the same pattern in our relationship with God.
First, God speaks. Then we respond in faith. This is the basic pattern of the Christian life.
Salvation is like that. God shows us the gospel, and we respond by believing.
Sanctification is like that. God says, “Walk in this way,” and we follow.
In other words, the life of faith is a life of trusting God and moving forward one step at a time.
You have probably experienced this too.
When you were baptized, did you not wonder, “Is this really the right decision?”
When you chose a church, did you not wonder, “Might there be a better church somewhere else?”
When you got married, did you not ask, “Is this person really God’s will for me?”
When you considered moving, changing jobs, or immigrating, did you not wonder, “Is this really God’s plan?”
We do not move forward only after we can see everything ahead. We move forward by trusting God, one step at a time. And in that process, God makes His guidance clearer.
We cannot call Jesus directly or exchange text messages with Him. But God has not left us alone. He has already given us what we need.
We have the Bible. Through it, we learn who God is, what He delights in, and what He desires.
We have the church. It is the place where we do not struggle alone, but pray together, support one another, and encourage one another.
We have the testimonies of brothers and sisters. When we hear how God has worked in other people’s lives, we too are strengthened.
God also sometimes gives us conviction through the message preached in worship. And the Holy Spirit guides us in prayer.
So the Christian life on this earth is a life of trusting God and responding to the guidance He gives us.
And thankfully, God does not demand that we be perfect.
If we become confused in our weakness, or even make mistakes, He is not the kind of God who says, “That’s the end.”
God is our Father. Jesus is the One who gave His life because He loves us.
Would such a God cast us away because of our failures? Certainly not.
Rather, God is the One who works all things for our good.
So what matters is this: seek God’s will. And when you are convinced it is His will, move forward by faith.
Today, in relation to this, I have something to share with you about the path ahead for my wife and me.
Let us pray.
Beloved Heavenly Father,
We are weak people. It is difficult for us to distinguish between our own desires and Your will, and we often walk according to our own thoughts.
But Lord, we thank You that by the Holy Spirit, You guide us and show us Your will through Your Word, prayer, circumstances, counsel, and the peace of the heart.
Please give us hearts that seek Your will. Make us people who live not for ourselves, but for Your glory and for Your kingdom.
And Lord, when Your will is made known, grant us the courage to take a step of faith rather than being ruled by fear and anxiety.
Just as Paul did not understand everything perfectly, yet obeyed when he became convinced that “God has called us,” help us also to obey when You bring us to conviction.
Even when doors are closed, help us to trust that this too is Your leading, and give us faith to entrust ourselves to Your best plan.
And Lord, help us not to fear making mistakes, but to believe that You are the God who works all things for our good, and so to walk boldly.
May each one of us become sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and live lives that follow Your will day by day.
