捧げる祝福

聖書箇所：ピリピ4：14ー19
　先週はクリスチャンの満足ということに関してでした。世の満足が物質的なものを得ることやまた、与えられているもので満足しようということに反して、パウロが教える満足は、主が最善をなしてくださっていることを信じつつ、自分が必要としていることを積極的に求めていくことによって主から与えられるという満足でした。与えられることで、主が共に居てくださることを実感できることは素晴らしいことです。
　今年のテーマは感謝と祈りを実践していきましょう、というものです。毎日感謝し、感謝できないことは祈りましょう。そうすると、ピリピへのテーマでもある「喜びの生活」に導かれます。聖書には主にある喜びとあります。主にある喜びは主がともに居てくださることを実感できる喜びであり、それは主にあって必要が満たされていくことで味わうことができます。
　さて、今日はパウロに多くの献金して助けて来たピリピ教会への励ましです。神様は人を通して与えてくださいます。神様は天からお金をその人の上に降らせるわけではありません。誰かを通して人を助けるのです。それを神様に用いられると言います。
　神様は何かを強制的にさせるお方ではありません。「嫌だったけど、夢に天使が現れてこうしないと殺されると脅されたので、しました。」などという人はいません。時々、強制されたなどという人もいますが、それは神様ではないでしょう。神様は「あなたはこれをしますか？」という導きをされるお方です。マリヤがイエスの母となる使命を受けた時も、喜んで応答しました。ですから、神に用いられる人は神様の導きに「はい、私がします。」と応答する人です。具体的に神様との会話があるというよりは、神様がある思いを入れて、その人がそれを実行したのです。まず、パウロは神様に用いられた人への感謝から書いています。
15 ピリピの人たち。あなたがたも知っているとおり、私が福音を宣べ伝え始めたころ、マケドニヤを離れて行ったときには、私の働きのために、物をやり取りしてくれた教会は、あなたがたのほかには一つもありませんでした。
16 テサロニケにいたときでさえ、あなたがたは一度ならず二度までも物を送って、私の乏しさを補ってくれました。
　いずれにしても、そのように神様に用いられた人には感謝を表さなければなりません。「神様は別にあなたじゃなくても、他の人を使っても私を助けてくれたから」という態度は良くないのです。その人が神様に応答するには信仰が必要だったのです。この地上にお金が余って困っている人はいません。また、時間もそうです。それを神様の導きに応答して、良いことをしてくれたのですから感謝しなければなりません。パウロはこの手紙で何度も感謝を伝えています。また、この手紙を書いた理由の一つも献金への感謝です。私は牧師ですから、信徒の助けを受ける立場にいます。良くしてくださる方は、本当に神様に用いられている人です。感謝です。
　ところで、神様が用いる人は裕福で時間があり、余裕もある人たちではありません。このピリピ教会は豊かな教会だったので、パウロを何度も助けたのではありません。むしろ、逆です。聖書にこうあります。これはピリピ教会のことです。
2コリント9：2 苦しみゆえの激しい試練の中にあっても、彼らの満ちあふれる喜びは、その極度の貧しさにもかかわらず、あふれ出て、その惜しみなく施す富となったのです。
　当時、パウロや教師たちを支える人たちには、それほどお金持ちはいませんでした。新約聖書にはお金持ちも登場しますが、ほとんどは貧しい人たちや奴隷たちでした。神はあえてお金持ちではなく、謙遜な貧しい人たちを選ぶのです。それは福音派の教会を見ても納得できます。たくさん人が集まっている教会もありますが、多くの教会は信徒がそれほど多くはない教会です。しかし、彼らには満ち溢れる喜びがあり、惜しみなく捧げています。
　さて、パウロはその献金を自分の生活費とエルサレム教会への支援に使いました。パウロは仕事を持っていましたが、教会を牧会したり、リーダー訓練をした時期もあったので、そのような時は献金で生活していました。パウロは異邦人への使徒でしたが、彼のモットーは教会は助け合うというものでした。
　ローマ 15:27 彼らは確かに喜んでそれをしたのですが、同時にまた、その人々に対してはその義務があるのです。異邦人は霊的なことでは、その人々からもらいものをしたのですから、物質的な物をもって彼らに奉仕すべきです。
　これは、パウロが当時経済的に困っていたエルサレム教会を支援する必要を書いています。私たちも同様です。私たちは宣教師や教会から福音を聞くことができました。ですから、彼らが経済的に困っている時には、物質的に助ける必要があるということです。世界中の教会が福音を語っています。福音こそが、神様が罪人に救いを与える唯一の方法です。イエスキリストの十字架がなければ、誰も神の前に立つことができません。この福音は、世界中に語られ、そして、それを待っている人たちが受け入れ天国にいくことができるのです。福音は、聞かせ続けなければなりません。
　先日、福音を語った人が洗礼の証を送ってきてくれました。もう４年ほど前でしょうか。当時オランダ駐在の日本人とズームでしばらく聖書の学びをしました。その時は、「私が信じることはないです」と断られました。しかし、不思議とその人は、日本に帰国後教会に行くようになりました。ある時、仕事で大変な時にある牧師から手紙をもらい、その時に書いてあったみ言葉が、その次の週に違う教会の牧師のメッセージ箇所だったことに驚き、神様は自分のことを知っていると驚き、洗礼を受ける決心をしたそうです。蒔かれた種はいずれ実を結びます。
さて、17節を解説します。
17 私は贈り物を求めているのではありません。私のほしいのは、あなたがたの収支を償わせて余りある霊的祝福なのです。
　日本語では、霊的祝福とありますが、これは意訳です。間違ってはいませんが、誤解します。聖書は、霊的な祝福に限定してはいません。捧げることは、また、受けることであるという原則があるのです。　
　箴言にはそのことを示すいくつかの聖句があります。
箴言19：17 寄るべのない者に施しをするのは、主に貸すことだ。主がその善行に報いてくださる。
22：9 善意の人は祝福を受ける。自分のパンを寄るべのない者に与えるから。
　新約聖書でも、主イエスがこう言っています。
ルカ6：38 与えなさい。そうすれば、自分も与えられます。人々は量りをよくして、押しつけ、揺すり入れ、あふれるまでにして、ふところに入れてくれるでしょう。あなたがたは、人を量る量りで、自分も量り返してもらうからです。」
　さて、17節の霊的祝福のところは、「アカウントに加えられる」とか「Rewardが与えられる」という意味です。銀行の残高が増えることです。信仰生活は、神様から恵を受ける生活です。その恵は、他の人に施すほど多くなります。
　恵は受ければ受けるほど、もっと神様のことが好きになります。神様もことが好きになれば、それだけ聖書を読みますし、祈ります。また、教会の行事に参加したり、証するようになります。また、罪を示されたら素直に悔い改めます。それが、ここでパウロが言っていることです。ピリピの問題が、神様の恵によって解決されていくだろうと言っているのです。ですから、困っている人を助けることは、神の祝福を受ける方法なのです。
　しかし、神様銀行は投資は受け付けません。いくら捧げたら、何%上乗せして帰ってくるという約束ではありません。神は色々な形で恵を与えてくださるお方です。さて、パウロは、捧げ物は神様への捧げ物であると書いています。
4：18 私は、すべての物を受けて、満ちあふれています。エパフロデトからあなたがたの贈り物を受けたので、満ち足りています。それは香ばしいかおりであって、神が喜んで受けてくださる供え物です。
　そして、神様に捧げることは、神様が私の必要を満たしてくださることでもあります。
19 また、私の神は、キリスト・イエスにあるご自身の栄光の富をもって、あなたがたの必要をすべて満たしてくださいます。
　「必要」という言葉が大事です。先週、必要は与えられますとお話ししました。何が必要かは神様が決めることです。先進国に住む人たちは発展途上国に住む人よりも多くの必要があるでしょう。ですから、必要だと思ったら祈りましょう。神様が必要だと判断したら、与えられます。大事なことは必要と贅沢は違うことです。多分、神様は私たちが贅沢な暮らしをすることは望んでいないと思います。
　贅沢はそれ自体が悪いことではないと思います。贅沢な人がいるので、経済が回るのです。しかし、クリスチャンにとって贅沢はいつも誘惑の中に自分を置くことです。
1ヨハネ2：16 すべての世にあるもの、すなわち、肉の欲、目の欲、暮らし向きの自慢などは、御父から出たものではなく、この世から出たものだからです。
　ですから、知恵あるクリスチャンは、お金が神様となってしまうような人生にならないように気をつけましょう。
　今日は捧げる祝福をお話ししました。捧げることは信仰が必要です。しかし、それはまた神様の真実を知るチャンスであり、神様の恵を受ける方法でもあります。神様の恵を受けることは、熱心な信仰生活につながります。ですから、たくさん恵を受けましょう。
　今日でピリピ人への手紙は終わります。
　最後に、20節を読みましょう。
20 どうか、私たちの父なる神に御栄えがとこしえにありますように。アーメン
　この後にあいさつが続きますが、私たちの人生で一番大事なのは、神の栄光が現れることです。
　パウロは食べるにしても、何をするにしても神の栄光が現れることを求めなさいと言っています。それが、私たちの人生を良い人生とするのです。
１コリント 10:31 こういうわけで、あなたがたは、食べるにも、飲むにも、何をするにも、ただ神の栄光を現すためにしなさい。
　人生は長くても100年です。そのうち、クリスチャンとして生きれるのは短いですし、本物、つまり、熱く燃えながらクリスチャンとして生きれるのはもっと短いはずです。天国に行ったら、一番楽しい思い出は、神様の栄光を表したことではないかと思います。夫婦の思い出といっても、天国では夫婦も家庭もありません。一人一人が神様を見ながら生活するのです。天国に行って、神様との思い出がまったくないのは永遠という時間の中で神様との話があまりありません。
　神様のためにしたことは全部記録されています。神様のための決断や罪との戦いや神様のために何かしたことはみんな残ります。そのノートを開く時に、数ページで終わる人もいれば、何冊にもなっている人もいるはずです。
　昔がんばったからもういいや、引退、ということはもったいないことです。生きている限り神の栄光ノートは書き続けています。
　祈りましょう。
父なる神様、この地上にだけ信仰生活があることを感謝します。信仰とは信じることで、迷いがあります。しかし、あなたはこの信仰を通して私たち一人一人を導いてくださっています。確信のある時もあり、ゆれうごく時もあります。しかし、どうぞあなたの真実をいつも見上げることができるように助けてください。そして、あなたの栄光とあなたが喜ばれることを行う事ができるように助け導いてください。聖霊の働きがいつもありますことを感謝します。そのうながしにいつも良い返事ができるようにしてください。助けが必要なところに、私たちの目と心が向くようにしてください。その人たちにしてあげることは主に捧げていることだと悟ることができるようにしてください。
　主イエスの名によって祈ります。アーメン。

The Blessing of Giving

Scripture Passage: Philippians 4:14-19 (ESV)

Last week, we discussed Christian contentment. Unlike worldly satisfaction, which is based on acquiring material things or being content with what one already has, Paul teaches that true contentment comes from trusting that the Lord is working for the best while actively seeking what we need from Him. Experiencing the presence of the Lord is a wonderful thing.

This year’s theme is to practice gratitude and prayer. Let us give thanks every day, and for the things we cannot be thankful for, let us pray. By doing so, we will be led into a “life of joy,” which is also the theme of Philippians. Scripture speaks of the joy in the Lord. The joy in the Lord is the joy of His presence and the joy of having our needs met in Him.

Today’s passage is Paul’s encouragement to the Philippian church, which had generously supported him. God provides through people. He does not drop money from heaven but uses others to help those in need. This is what it means to be used by God.

God does not force anyone to give. There is no one who says, "I didn’t want to, but an angel appeared in my dream and threatened to kill me if I didn’t." Sometimes people claim they were forced, but that is not God’s doing. God leads by asking, "Will you do this?" When Mary received her calling to be the mother of Jesus, she responded with joy. Those who are used by God are those who respond, "Yes, I will do it." Rather than having a direct conversation with God, He places a thought in a person’s heart, and they act upon it. From God’s perspective, He instills the thought in the person who will carry it out. That is why some people are used by God, while others are not.

Paul first expresses gratitude to those whom God used.
Philippians 4:15-16 (ESV)
"And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only. Even in Thessalonica you sent me help for my needs once and again."

We must be thankful to those whom God has used. It is not good to have the attitude, "God could have used someone else to help me." The person who responds to God’s call exercises faith. There is no one on this earth who has too much money or too much time. Those who give are responding to God’s leading, and they should be appreciated. Paul repeatedly expresses gratitude in this letter, and one of the reasons he wrote it was to thank the Philippians for their offering. As a pastor, I receive support from believers. Those who help are truly being used by God. I am grateful.

However, those whom God uses are not necessarily the wealthy with plenty of time and resources. The Philippian church was not wealthy, yet they helped Paul many times. In fact, the Bible says:
2 Corinthians 8:2 (ESV)
"For in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.”

At that time, those who supported Paul and other teachers were not wealthy. The New Testament mentions rich people, but most believers were poor or even slaves. God chooses not the rich, but the humble and the poor. This is evident even in evangelical churches today. While some churches are large, many are small. Yet, these churches overflow with joy and give generously.

Paul used these offerings for his living expenses and to support the Jerusalem church. While he had a job, there were times when he pastored churches and trained leaders, during which he lived on offerings. As the apostle to the Gentiles, Paul’s motto was that the church should support one another.

Romans 15:27 (ESV)
"For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings.”

This refers to the need to support the struggling church in Jerusalem. Likewise, we must also support missionaries and churches in financial need, just as we have received the gospel from them. The gospel is preached worldwide, and it is the only way God saves sinners. Without Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, no one could stand before God. The gospel must continue to be preached.

Recently, someone I had shared the gospel with sent me their baptism testimony. Three years ago, while in the Netherlands, he studied the Bible with me over Zoom. At the time, he firmly stated, "I will never believe." However, after returning to Japan, he started attending church. One day, while struggling with work, he received a letter from a pastor. The verse in the letter was the same as the message he heard in church the following week. Realizing that God knew him personally, he decided to be baptized. Seeds that are sown will eventually bear fruit.

Now, let’s examine verse 17.
Philippians 4:17 (ESV)
"Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that increases to your credit."
The phrase "spiritual blessing" in Japanese translations is an interpretation rather than a literal translation. It does not mean that giving results only in spiritual blessings. Giving follows the principle that we also receive.

Proverbs illustrates this principle:
Proverbs 19:17 (ESV)
"Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed."
Proverbs 22:9 (ESV)
"Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor."
Jesus also said:
Luke 6:38 (ESV)
"Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

The phrase in verse 17 means "added to your account" or "rewarded." Just as a bank balance increases, the life of faith is one of receiving God’s grace, which grows as we give to others.

Receiving grace leads to loving God more, which in turn leads to reading the Bible, praying, attending church, and witnessing to others. It also brings repentance. Paul is saying that the Philippians’ problems would be resolved through God’s grace. Supporting fellow believers is both a way to receive God’s blessing and an offering to Him.
However, God’s "bank" does not accept investments with guaranteed returns. Giving does not come with a fixed percentage of return. God looks at the heart, and if it is right, He provides in His way.
Philippians 4:18-19 (ESV)
"I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

"Need" is an important word. We must pray for what we need, trusting that God will determine what is necessary. Needs and luxuries are different. While luxury is not inherently wrong, it can be a temptation.

1 John 2:16 (ESV)
"For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”

Wise Christians guard against making money their god. Giving requires faith, but it is also an opportunity to experience God’s truth and receive His grace.

Let Us Read Verse 20
Philippians 4:20 (ESV)
"To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Following this, Paul continues with his greetings, but the most important thing in our lives is that God's glory is revealed.

Paul teaches that whether we eat or do anything else, we should seek to glorify God. This is what makes our lives truly meaningful.

1 Corinthians 10:31 (ESV)
"So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God."

Even if life lasts 100 years, the time we live as Christians is short, and the time we live as true Christians is even shorter. When we reach heaven, our most joyful memories will likely be those moments when we glorified God. Even memories of marriage will not hold the same meaning, for in heaven, there are no marriages or families. Each person will live in the presence of God, looking upon Him. It would be sad to enter eternity with little to recall about our relationship with God.

Everything we do for God is recorded. Every decision for Him, every battle against sin, and every act of service remains. When the book of our life is opened, some will have only a few pages, while others will have volumes.

Saying, "I worked hard in the past, so I can retire now," is a waste. As long as we live, we continue to write our book of God's glory.

Let Us Pray
Heavenly Father, we thank You that faith is only necessary in this life. Faith means believing despite doubts, yet through faith, You guide each of us. There are moments of certainty and times of wavering, but help us always to look up to Your truth. Lead us to act for Your glory and to do what pleases You.
We thank You for the work of the Holy Spirit. May we always respond to His prompting with a willing heart. Help us to direct our eyes and hearts toward those in need, understanding that what we do for them, we do for You.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
